The Elephant in the Ivory Tower: The Anti-Disciplinary Animal launch event

Tuesday 14 March 2023, 6.00PM to 8.00PM

Speaker(s): Vanessa Ashall Sarah Bezan Amanda Rees Erica Sheen

Many researchers across the University engage with the non-human animal as the subject or object of their study, but there is currently no formal network connecting us across our academic disciplines – or asking what kind of challenge the non-human animal offers to these conventional frameworks of academic knowledge.  Bringing together research and thinking which allows animals to break or exceed the conventions that have historically defined knowledge as human, this three-year project will work collectively towards the production of a manifesto for an anti-disciplinary academic space.

At our launch event we will invite York Colleagues to explore four preliminary ideas which have arisen through our own work, and invite attendees to contribute their own ideas and suggestions:

  • What makes an animal a person?
  • Do animals have a future?
  • What is a good death?
  • How do we see and feel extinction?

Please join us to explore these questions, and help us to identify others, in addition to hearing more about our ideas for developing the Anti-Disciplinary Animal Network at York and beyond.
