Resistant Resources Lecture Series: Sugar, Coal and Oil

Monday 9 February 2015, 6.00PM

This double-header event will offer exciting papers covering sugar, coal and oil, as they pertain to the General Strike, the Caribbean, and Zombie movies. If you are interested in world literature and culture, the General Strike of 1926, Caribbean fiction and culture, sugar and slavery, petro-modernity, and/or zombie films this should appeal to you. 

Speakers:

  • Dr Michael Niblett (Warwick), 'King Coal and Emperor Oil: Striking Energies in Proletarian Fiction': focusing on the coal and oil industries, this paper will compare literary representations of the 1926 General Strike in Britain and the Trinidad labour riots and stoppages of 1937. 

  • Dr Kerstin Oloff (Durham), 'Sugar to Oil: The Ecology of George A. Romero's Zombie Movies': this paper argues that with Night of the Living Dead (1968), the zombie enters the age of petro-modernity and the Green Revolution.
