‘The Northern Way’: The Archbishops of York and the North of England, 1304-1405

‘The Northern Way’ is a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and based at the University of York in partnership with The National Archives and with the support of York Minster. The project is creating a large corpus of freely-available online source materials drawn both from The National Archives and from the collections of the Borthwick Institute for Archives for the Northern Province. We also aim to provide a history of the Archbishops as leading figures in the north during the century that ended with the execution for treason of Archbishop Richard Scrope in 1405. Registration is open for our virtual project conference which focuses both on the nature and purpose of administrative records of the northern province and their value in writing the history of northern societies and institutions. Our Principal Investigator, Professor Sarah Rees Jones, and our Co-Investigator, Dr Paul Dryburgh, will present keynote lectures and the conference will include a virtual introduction to those Registers now held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives, University of York. The first session will investigate the origin and purpose of the records themselves. Further sessions will explore themes such as the roles of the Archbishops as both pastors and governors, ecclesiastical governance, popular piety and gender in the fourteenth century.
