Building the world of Lex Arcana RPG. Real sources for fantasy questions

Monday 19 September 2022, 5.30PM

Speaker(s): Dr Francesca Garello

Pen-and-paper role-playing games represent for many a first encounter with themes and figures from ancient and medieval literature. A particular case in point in the panorama of role-playing games is Lex Arcana, conceived and developed by Leo Colovini, Dario De Toffoli, Marco Maggi and Francesco Nepitello, a game set in an uchronic version of the Roman Empire, first published in 1993. A new edition of the game was published by Quality Games in 2018, in English and Italian, and recently translated into Japanese. The attention to detail and reconstruction of the ancient world has been deepened, also with the participation of a classical archaeologist, Francesca Garello. Francesca Garello will discuss with us how the world of Lex Arcana was constructed, with particular reference to literary sources of inspiration.

Francesca Garello is both a classical archaeologist and author of works of fiction. Her numerous works include Encyclopaedia Arcana. Sourcebook for the new edition of Lex Arcana, (Quality Games, 2018) and ItaliaLand of Ancient Magic and Dark Intrigue (Quality Games 2022), a new setting module for Lex Arcana

Francesca Garello will be introduced by Michele Campopiano (University of York).
