The Ordered Universe Project: Interdisciplinary Readings of Robert Grosseteste’s Scientific Opuscula

Prof. Tom McLeish (University of York) will present a summary of the Durham-Oxford-(and now York) AHRC-funded ‘Ordered Universe’ project. A radical interdisciplinary methodology brings historians, latinists, philologists, medieval philosophers and theologians in close working with scientists and engineers to reappraise from multiple perspectives the scientific works of the great English polymath Robert Grosseteste (c.1173 - 1253). Outputs from the project comprise not only a new 7-volume series of editions, translations and commentaries, but also a series of new scientific publications inspired by the medieval material. The project has also developed a major branch of new creative arts.
