Internships and Placements

The skills I’ll take away from this internship will serve me well moving forward. However, it’s the experience and the people I met that truly made it a fun and exciting experience - academically, professionally and personally. Not only is it good for the pocketbook and the CV, it provides you with professional perspective, new skills, and contacts that may be extremely beneficial.

IPUP facilitates internships and placements for current students to work with our partners in the museum, public history and media sectors. These opportunities provide a platform for students to translate their research and writing skills into public output, and provide valuable professional experience.

Internships are short, part-time, paid contracts intended for graduate students registered at the University of York. They provide an opportunity for students to develop their skills, experience and CVs in various different employment contexts. The majority of internships take place during the summer, however we often have opportunities at other times in the year. Internship opportunities are published on this website when they are available.

Placements are undertaken as part of a taught Masters programme in History. Students can elect to take the Public History Placement module, which comprises practical experience in a partner organisation, private study, and assessed work. The placement is a core module for students taking the MA in Public History.

Student blogs

Students who have completed an internship or placement with IPUP are invited to write an entry for our postgraduate student blog page. In their blog entries, the students reflect on their experiences of working with leading practitioners of public history in fields such as archives, museums, historic houses, public festivals and the media.
