HRC PhD Poster Competition

The 2019 HRC PhD Poster Competition is now open for entries

This is an invitation to reflect on, and represent, your doctoral research in a fun new way, and collectively produces an impressive and engaging snapshot of the great variety of research being undertaken here.

What's required?

You are invited to create a poster which

  • offers a clear 'taster encounter' with your research project for a non-specialist audience, and
  • has quickly appreciable dramatic visual impact

In considering ways of approaching the task, you may find it helpful to have a look at previous years' winning entries.

Top tips are: think visually, use some (but not too much) text, avoid jargon, aim for the eye-catching, pick enticing detail and target an audience who knows nothing about your specialist area.

Why enter?

It is useful (for all of us, at all stages) to be thinking of new ways of interpreting and making accessible our research. Producing a poster can be a very useful way of clarifying your doctoral project not only to others, but also to yourself. It will also give you practical experience in communicating your research to different audiences. And there are also cash prizes for winners... (see below)

Format and submission requirements

Posters should be A2 sized, and may be in either portrait or landscape format. They should be submitted as an attachment (in PDF format) to Helen Jacobs (helen.jacobs@york.ac.uk) by 12 noon on Monday 1st April 2019.

To help you, we have produced some tips for arts and humanities poster design.

Who is eligible to enter?

Any current PhD student from the Departments of Archaeology, English, History, History of Art, Philosophy, Language and Linguistic Science, Music, Theatre, Film and Television and the Centre for Medieval Studies may enter. The only PhD students not eligible to enter are the winners from last year's poster competition.

Judging and exhibition

The competition will be judged by an interdisciplinary panel chaired by the HRC Deputy Director, Keith Allen. All entered posters will be displayed at a poster exhibition in the HRC on Monday 29th April when the results will be announced.

Prizes

The winners of the competition will receive cash prizes as follows:

First prize: £80
Second prize: £60
Third prize: £40

The winning entries will be displayed in the Berrick Saul Building after the event and on the HRC website

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy rethinking and reshaping your doctoral project into a new and bold design configuration.

We look forward to receiving your entries!
