PhD/MPhil supervision and training


PhD/MPhil students within their normal period of enrolment should meet with their supervisors twice a term. In addition, students should have a Thesis Advisory Panel (or TAP) meeting at least once within every six-month period (for full-time students), or at least once a year (for part-time students).

Recording your meetings

Supervision and TAP meetings should be recorded on Skillsforge following the guidance issued by Research Student Administration.


The University and the Department offer a wide range of opportunities to PhD and MPhil students for training in research and transferable skills. All students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.

Professional Development Plan (PDP)

All first year research students must complete a Professional Development Plan.  Please visit the YGRS PDP pages for further details.

Research Data Management

Good research data management enables the University and its researchers to meet the standards and responsibilities set out in the University's Code of practice on research integrity.

All research students must complete and maintain a research data management plan from the start of their programme. The Library's Research Support Team is available to help if you have any questions. Visit the University's Research Data Management webpages or email

Department training provision

The graduate training provided or supported by the department addresses discipline-specific research skills, the research environment, and professional development. Research students will be notified of the department's training opportunities during each academic year. Opportunities are likely to include: a regular series of workshops with academic staff and advanced doctoral candidates on research, dissertation writing, and teaching in history of art; question and answer sessions with professionals in careers related to history of art; and opportunities to attend, organise, and/or present papers at research seminars and conferences.

University training provision

The Building Research and Innovation Capacity team (BRIC) offers workshops designed to equip you with the skills, attributes and knowledge to thrive as an independent researcher:

  • Communicate your research to specialists and non-specialists;
  • Engage with those who can assist, promote and act upon your research;
  • Manage your time and resources;
  • Take responsibility for the legal and ethical aspects of your research;
  • Collaborate and network effectively
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, integrity and flexibility.

Teaching opportunities

The University of York has a reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Research students who contribute to the teaching at the university play an important role, adding vibrancy and richness to the portfolio of research and enhancing the learning experience of the students they support. The History of Art department values this contribution and offers research students currently in their first or second year (or part-time equivalent) the opportunity to apply for teaching on Stage 1 of its undergraduate programmes. PhD/MPhil students will be invited to apply for opportunities as they arise.

2024/25 Opportunities

Any teaching roles in 2024/25 will be advertised in November 2023. Opportunities are typically intended for PhD students currently in their first or second year (or part-time equivalent).
