Guardian University Guide shows strengths of Health Sciences at York

Health Sciences at York ranks 5th and 8th in Guardian University Guide 2026.

The Department of Health Science has placed 5th and 8th in the Guardian University Guide 2026 for the subjects of General Nursing and Mental Health Nursing. The ranking recognises the quality of our courses, and the experiences and opportunities they provide to our students.

Our Head of Department Prof Kate Flemming said: “The Department of Health Sciences are delighted to have achieved two top-ten places in the Guardian University Guide 2026 for our Nursing programmes, coming 5th for General (Adult) Nursing and 8th for Mental Health Nursing. We are proud to play such a key role in developing the healthcare professionals of tomorrow, contributing to the local, regional and national workforce. Our staff work tirelessly to support our students as they grow into skilled, knowledgeable and caring health care practitioners - our position in the league tables reflects this work and the quality of the programmes they deliver.”

The Guardian University Guide is published annually to help students choose a university course. It ranks UK universities by undergraduate degree subjects in metrics such as student satisfaction, continuation, spend per student and graduate outcomes.

The result comes hot on the heels of another top ten ranking for Nursing and Midwifery at York, which placed 7th in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2026.

York’s overall position

In total, four subjects at York ranked in the UK top 10:

  • Hull York Medical School
    • 3rd for Medicine
  • Department of Health Sciences
    • 5th for General Nursing 
    • 8th for Mental Health Nursing 
  • Department of Sociology
    • 10th for Criminology 

A further five subjects ranked in the UK top 20.
