Posted on 25 February 2016

Laura Scott, lecturer in mental health in the Department of Health Sciences, has been appointed to one of the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Fitness to Practise panels.

Laura will sit on panels of the Conduct and Competence Committee as a registrant member. The role of this panel is to consider cases where a nurse or midwife’s fitness to practise is alleged to be impaired as a result of misconduct, lack of competence or a criminal offence and it is independent from the professional regulator.

Panelists hear evidence from the NMC and from the nurse or midwife in much the same way as in a court. The main decisions the panel has to make are whether the allegations have been proved; if they have, whether they amount to an impairment of fitness to practise, and if so, what the appropriate sanction is.

Laura comments: “I am looking forward to fulfilling this key role in the fitness to practise process and am keen to share the knowledge and experience gained throughout with colleagues and students.”
