Turning the tide of limb loss in diabetes

Posted on 19 March 2015

Local health professionals involved in the care of people with diabetes attended an event run by the Department of Health Sciences to turn the tide of limb loss in diabetes and improve care to reduce amputation rates across Yorkshire.

Recent results in the Diabetes Footcare Activity Profiles (Public Health England, 2014) demonstrated alarming rates of amputation as a result of diabetic foot disease in the Yorkshire region compared to the rest of England. Many of these foot complications can be minimised or are preventable.

Delegates learned about prevention and screening and how early referral to a multi-disciplinary diabetes foot care team, as recommended by Diabetes UK and the National Minimum Skills Framework for commissioning of footcare services for people with diabetes (2011), is key to improving patient care and reducing amputation rates.
