Kate's Bangladesh lecture

Posted on 6 May 2015

Health Science's Senior Lecturer Dr Kate Flemming was invited to Bangladesh to teach at the James P Grant School of Public Health, Brac University.

Kate was invited to teach a short course entitled: "Introduction to Systematic Reviews and Synthesis of Quantitative and Qualitative Evidence" in April.

The aim of her two-day course was to develop participants’ understanding of systematic reviews of both qualitative and quantitative research, including the processes of question formulation, searching, data extraction and data synthesis. Kate was accompanied by Dr Ruth Garside a senior lecturer in Evidence Synthesis at the University of Exeter.

The trip was funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Forty participants ranging from research assistants to senior Bangladeshi public health academics took part in the course, which was extremely well received. Kate and Ruth have been invited to return in the future to teach a longer four-day course on reviewing.

Kate said: "I am grateful to Brac University and USAID for giving me the opportunity to help develop systematic review skills with a group of highly motivated staff in a country as fascinating as Bangladesh."
