Profile

Biography

Sue joined the University of York in 2019 after 15 years at the University of Southampton, where she earned an MA(ed) in Management of Education and Professional Studies and PhD in Health Sciences. Sue is a Registered Nurse with a clinical background focused on critical care and outreach, which continues to inform her practice and educational focus. 

Sue has extensive experience in curriculum development and pedagogical development in critical care and advanced practice, with a current focus on developing advanced practice supported by doctoral-level education.  Sue is also a Professional Nurse Advocate and Executive Coach, having gained a postgraduate qualification from the University of Hull (PNA in 2025) and a postgraduate certificate in Executive Coaching from the University of West England in 2026.

Research

Overview

Sue’s research focuses on the development of advanced practice with a particular interest in supervision and the development of tolerance to uncertainty in practice.  This follows on from Sue’s PhD thesis, which developed a new methodology to identify the unspoken rules of the nursing gaze.

Supervision

Sue is interested in supervising PhD candidates who are interested in exploring advanced practice, pedagogy in healthcare professional education and technology.
