Some of our PhD students have received awards this term to assist them with travel to archives, libraries, and collections that are relevant to their research.

Congratulations go to:

Madeleine Pelling – Women’s Studies Group Bursary
Madeleine is a PhD candidate in History of Art at the University of York.  She will use the award to travel to the John Rylands Library where she will be researching the friendship between Horace Walpole and lesser-known bluestocking Mary Hamilton. 

Rebecca Simpson - Women’s Studies Group Bursary
Rebecca is a PhD candidate in English Literature at the University of York.  She works on narratives of pregnancy and will use the award to transcribe MSS in the Douglas papers at the Hunterian Museum and Glasgow University Special Collections, which include the Mary Toft (‘rabbit births’) confessions. 

Lizzy Spencer - BECC/BSECS Travel Award
Lizzy is a PhD candidate in History at the University of York. Her research focuses on women’s clothing in eighteenth-century England.

Harriet Neal -  BARS Stephen Copley Award
Harriet is a PhD candidate in English Literature at the University of York. Her research is centred around ecofeminist vegan philosophy and ethics in women’s novels. 

Jennifer Buckley – QMCECS/ BSECS Visiting Fellowship
Jenny is a PhD candidate in English Literature at the University of York. Her research focuses on the long 18thC: periodicals, print culture, space, and literary institutions.
