Introduction to Systematic Reviews & Critical Appraisal Course, 4th – 6th June 2018

Posted on 6 July 2018

Last month, CRD welcomed 25 delegates from across the UK and Europe to the three day course Introduction to Systematic Reviews & Critical Appraisal. The course was held in the Conference Suite at York Science Park where delegates spent the best part of a week learning about the systematic review process.

The course offers a comprehensive introduction to the production of high quality intervention reviews in health research – beginning at the review question and protocol stage, the literature searches, and continuing with study selection and data extraction. This is followed by sessions on risk of bias, an introduction to meta-analysis and a computer practical. For the first time, this course included an introduction to GRADE. Sessions on reporting and dissemination as well as critically appraising a systematic review round off the programme. Throughout the course, delegates have the chance to apply their newly acquired knowledge in practicals and group work exercises.

To balance the packed schedule, course attendees and CRD staff enjoyed a meal out at El Piano, York on the first evening. There was also time for socialising and networking during informal lunchtime poster sessions that showcased some of CRD’s recent work.

The course has been part of CRD’s service for over 15 years and continues to receive great feedback from attendees. Here is what some of the June 2018 delegates had to say:

“Excellent course. Highly recommended. It really helped me think through issues with my ongoing systematic review.”

“…a brilliant course. It was VERY well and efficiently run, all sessions were not only useful, but invaluable, and they were delivered with energy and enthusiasm. I got a huge amount out of the course, both in the areas I had some knowledge of and those in which I had none. It was also very personable, and everyone involved was approachable and keen to help and answer all levels of questions. I would not hesitate to recommend the course to others in the future.”

“I think every session added a bit more clarity to my understanding of the process.”

“I loved the posters.”

“Your systematic approach – step by step – has been so good. Thank you for a fantastic course.”

The next course will run in November 2018, dates to be confirmed. Please check our website training pages, follow us on Twitter @CRD_Courses for updates and register your interest with crd-training@york.ac.uk
