Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Conference 2018

Posted on 22 March 2018

CRD researchers attended the recent RCPCH Conference in Glasgow to present findings from work on child health.

Dr Bob Phillips, an NIHR Postdoctoral Fellow, was invited to talk about 'Supportive Care', in which he focused on managing the complications and improving patient experience of treatments for childhood cancer. This includes reducing the problems from infectious complications, supporting nutrition, managing nausea and vomiting and exploring the benefits and disadvantages of surveillance scans when treatment has finished. He drew upon research undertaken at CRD, involving national and international collaborators. Further details about the project can be found here.

Jennifer Brown presented findings from a recently completed Cochrane review of C-reactive protein for the diagnosis of infection in newborn infants. Based on evidence from 20 studies, the review concluded that CRP is not sufficiently accurate to diagnose infection in newborns. The project was funded by an NIHR Cochrane Programme grant and will be published in the Cochrane Library. The protocol is available here

Mark Corbett presented a poster which summarised the findings from an NIHR-commissioned scoping review and survey of NHS practice on the different types of intervention used for treating extravasation injuries in infants and young children. The results will be used by NIHR to inform a decision on commissioning a primary research study.
