CAHR staff to give keynote address at Refugee Law Judges Conference

Posted on 15 October 2014

Martin Jones has been invited to give a keynote address on October 22nd in Tunis at the 10th World Conference of the International Association for Refugee Law Judges.

The title of Martin's address will be "Access to Justice and Legal Aid for Refugees and Asylum Seekers; what can the Judiciary do?".  The address draws upon Martin's research on models of refugee legal aid and the legal empowerment of refugees in the Global South.

The IARLJ is a worldwide association of judges who, inter alia, seek to foster within the judiciary and quasi-judicial decision makers world-wide a common understanding of refugee law principles and to encourage the use of fair practices and procedures to determine refugee law issues. The conference will be opened by the President of Tunisia Dr Moncef Marzouki and the President of its Administrative Tribunals Judge Mohamed Faouzi Ben Hammed.  The other keynotes of the conference will be delivered by Dr Volker Türk, Director of International Protection at United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Justice Bernard McCloskey, the President of the Upper Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber).
