CAHR former visiting fellow, Sri Lankan human rights defender Ruki Fernando has been released from police custody.

Ruki Fernando

The Centre for Applied Human Rights has been pleased to learn that Ruki Fernando was released from custody on Tuesday evening 18 March. Ruki had been detained together with Rev. Fr Praveen Mahesan under the Prevention of Terrorism Act on Sunday 16 March. Both were released without charges. The arrest was condemned by governments and human rights organisations worldwide, including the Centre for Applied Human Rights.

Strong local and international pressure from friends, colleagues, human rights activists, media and governments surmounted quickly and is believed to have helped to secure the release of both Ruki and Fr Praveen.
