Introduction

Measures described below are based on the principles of Good Microbial Practice and represent the minimum standards to be applied by all workers performing microbial work activities (including all Class 1 GM activities presenting no / negligible risk) to either prevent exposure to humans or the environment, or reduce exposure to the lowest reasonably practicable level.

Higher risk microbial work activities (requiring Containment Level 2 / 3 facilities) will require additional, more specific containment measures as identified in the risk assessment to ensure exposure is prevented or adequately controlled.  These should be documented in a specific set of Local Rules / Code of Practice for work at Containment Level 2, and must be documented for all activities at Containment Level 3.

All workers must be instructed on this CoP as part of their local induction training.
