Plant Ionomics in Action: Decoding Trace Element Accumulation for Engineering Biology
Professor David E Salt is the former research director of genomics at the Bindley Bioscience Center at Purdue University in the US, founding director of the Centre for Genome-Enabled Biology and Medicine at the University of Aberdeen, UK, and founding director of the Future Food Beacon of Excellence at the University of Nottingham.
He co-created and pioneered the field of plant ionomics, using high-throughput mass spectrometry and genome-wide mapping to profile the complete elemental
composition of plants. His research uncovers the molecular mechanisms governing mineral nutrient transport, heavy metal tolerance, and hyperaccumulation - driving
advancements in crop biofortification, sustainable agriculture, and phytoremediation. Speaking to the ELEMENTAL network, David will explore the future directions of
ionomics and its role in emerging bioprocesses for environmental processing and metal recovery.
