When is a formal specific written risk assessment needed?
A formal specific written risk assessment is required in the following circumstances:
- for all activities involving ‘high hazard’ chemicals
- for all activities that have been judged to present a high risk of exposure i.e. for those activities where an exposure to a substance is considered likely
- for all activities that have been judged to present a high risk of fire or explosion
Laboratory groups may also choose to prepare specific written assessments for all their activities involving hazardous chemicals.

The risk assessment form must be approved by the Supervisor / Group Leader before work begins.
