The Biology Graduate School encourage you to join a national scientific society appropriate to your research area, e.g. The Biochemical Society, Society for Experimental Biology, British Ecological Society.
Membership for graduate students is usually very reasonable and gives you access to information about the Society, and forthcoming national conferences at which may want to present work. You should enter details of conferences attended, posters, talks given, etc on your skill forge transcript. Discuss this with your supervisor.
You receive funds for travel, subsistence and accommodation expenses at conferences up to a maximum of about £100 each year (roll-over from one year to the next is allowed). Some grant-supported students may also be able to claim further money from their grant-awarding body - check with your supervisor well in advance of the conference date.
Please contact Jane Turner regarding accessing your allowances.
