Research Experience Placements (REP)

The Research Experience Placements scheme provides support for undergraduate summer research placements. These summer placements are funded as part of the White Rose DTP on Mechanistic Biology and York will host 3 each summer for the duration of DTP2 (2016-2020).

Purpose

  • To give promising undergraduates a first-hand opportunity to gain greater experience of research in the biosciences
  • To raise the profile of research careers amongst undergraduate students
  • To interest students in postgraduate research in strategically important areas for BBSRC

Students:

Good second year students taking a degree in the Biology or Chemistry department and have an interest in research are encouraged to apply for this opportunity. These placements aim to give undergraduate students an opportunity to do research in a lab setting, which they would not otherwise have, and therefore priority will be given to students who are not doing a Year Away.

Project

Supervisors should propose a realistic plan for a well-supervised project that will provide the student with a useful research experience. The projects will be under the remit of the White Rose DTP and the focus of the project must be on Mechanistic Biology. This opportunity is made possible by the level of BBSRC funding in our departments, therefore priority will be given to labs holding current BBSRC grants.

Funding

The student will receive a stipend of £200 per week and the lab will receive £500 for consumables to support a 10 week summer project.

Timing

A call for projects will go out to staff at the end of Spring Term. Projects will be considered and approved by BBSRC DTP Admissions Committee prior to being advertised to students over the Easter break. Students will have an opportunity to discuss potential placements with supervisors during the first two weeks of Summer Term. A student may apply for only one project; supervisor may bid for only one student.

Reporting

A short report to the BBSRC detailing the REP must be prepared by the supervisor and student at the end of the placement and submitted to the Biology Graduate office (julie.knox@york.ac.uk) by 1st October.
