Checking documents

You must check that the documents are valid with the worker present.

When undertaking the check, look for:

  • Documents are genuine, original, have not been changed or tampered with and all belong to the person who has provided them
  • Dates for any visa or other expiry dates are still valid
  • Photos are of the same person across all documents and look like the worker
  • Dates of birth are the same on all documents
  • The worker has permission to do the type of work being offered (including any limit on the hours of work)

If the documents have different names, the employee must provide supporting documents to validate the difference, such as a marriage or divorce certificate or deed poll. Copy and verify these in the same way as the other documents.
