Safer Recruitment Procedure
Roles and responsibilities
A key role in implementing this policy lies with all employees involved in recruitment to these posts for ensuring the following requirements are actioned within their area of responsibility and control.
Recruiting manager
The Recruiting Manager is responsible for ensuring that:
- Identifying if a vacancy should follow the Safer Recruitment policy
- Ensure the vacancy is flagged as falling within the parameters of 'Safer Recruitment' when completing the vacancy request form. This should be flagged in the employment checks section under 'Other' and then noting Safer Recruitment
- Checking that a full employment history has been given by candidates during shortlisting. Where there are gaps ensuring explanation has been provided.
- Ensure that at least least one panel member has undertaken safer recruitment training
Minimum training requirements are currently, if you have undertaken one of these courses you should record this in the LMS system:
- Safer Recruitment Training for the recruitment of staff teaching and supporting on the University's apprenticeship provision: Solvendis
- Safer Recruitment Training for the recruitment of staff working in regulated activity with children and young people: NSPCC learning
- A safeguarding question must be asked of all candidates at the interview. The recruiting manager should ensure this is asked.
- The linked interview question bank has been supplied by the Apprenticeship Team
- Reviewing references for successful candidates and confirming these are satisfactory
HR Services
HR Services will ensure:
- The requirement for a enhanced DBS is noted in the job advert and job description
- Candidates are asked as part of the application process to confirm they have given a full employment history and given details of any gaps in employment
- Ensure standard references are requested and follow up with agreed safeguarding questions. These responses will be shared with the recruiting manager for review.
- Undertake an Enhanced DBS check
- Check interview question has been asked surrounding safeguarding
Apprenticeship unit
The Apprenticeship Team will ensure:
- Recruiting managers engaged with recruitment related to the Apprenticeship programme are aware of the requirements of the Safer Recruitment
- Review processes and work with relevant teams to update processes/procedures when appropriate.
- Share pertinent updates with recruiting managers who are using the safer recruitment process.
