A reminder of this year's arrangements

Pay negotiations

The Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) conduct pay negotiations with Trade Unions on behalf of numerous HE institutions, including the University of York. In February 2023, despite an impasse between UCEA and UCU, employers were advised that they should implement the 2023-24 pay uplift.

For further information on the negotiations and a reminder of the uplift percentages, see the communication that was shared in March.

Timings of the uplift

In light of cost of living pressures, part of the uplift was implemented straight away. You will have seen this effective in your pay from 1 February 2023.

We wanted to remind colleagues that the second part of the uplift will be implemented with effect from 1 August 2023.

We've created a table which shows the University's pay spine at three different times: firstly as it was before the 2023-24 uplift, then with the February portion of the uplift applied and finally how it will look after the second part of the uplift from August. View the salary table here.

Apprentices/Interns

Apprentice salaries and Intern salaries are calculated as a percentage of the pay spine. Therefore those salaries were uplifted in February 2023, and the remainder of the uplift will be applied from 1 August 2023.

Professorial colleagues

As with previous years we took the decision to apply an increase of 5% to our professorial bands, even though these pay rates are not part of the framework agreement. Colleagues in professorial bands received the first part of this uplift with effect from 1 February 2023. The remaining part of the uplift will be implemented with effect from 1 August 2023.

Colleagues in Senior Management

If you are in a professional senior management grade (Grade 9 and above), your pay cycle is different. This means you won't have received an increase from 1 February 2023 and there won't be an increase in your August 2023 pay. However, we will take consideration of the changes to the national framework when setting the performance related increases that will be effective from 1 October 2023.
