Who deliver the service

The Osteoporosis Assessment Service is a mobile health screening company specialising in offering low cost health assessments to employees within the workplace. They will be visiting the University to provide bone density assessments. These are by appointment only and as previous visits show, early booking is advisable to avoid missing out.

What is Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a health condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. It develops slowly over several years and is often only diagnosed when a fall or sudden impact causes a bone to break (fracture). The condition affects one in every two women and one in every five men. Women characteristically suffer after the age of menopause, but men can begin to suffer from a much earlier age.

Details about the assessment

The machine used to perform the assessments is a heel ultrasound scanner (McCue CUBAClinical) which does not use X-rays but safe ultrasound signals. The bone density measured in the heel is strongly related to the hip and spine and is an excellent scanning site for osteoporosis assessments. A small amount of ultrasound gel is placed on a bare heel and the scan is performed within three minutes. The results are printed and explained to each client at the time of their consultation.

This service is being made available at the invitation of Occupational Health, as one of our health promotion campaigns, in combination with menopause awareness.

Costs

The cost will be £20 per head.
