The University should take the same steps to avoid the redundancy regardless of whether the employee has been appointed on a fixed term contract as it would one or an open basis. One way of avoiding a redundancy is through the redeployment of 'at risk' staff.

Redeployment within the department

Departments are encouraged to identify suitable opportunities for staff approaching the end of their contracts, typically this will involve moving colleagues undertaking time limited projects or activities to different projects or funded areas of work that require the same or similar skills, knowledge and qualifications. To extend a colleagues contract submit a contract variation form.

Colleagues that have not been recruited outside our normal recruitment procedures are required to apply and be formally assessed against the requirements of the role through a recruitment exercise.

Ensure all employees at risk of redundancy are given equal access to redeployment opportunities. This may require a competitive selection process in some cases.

The redeployment register

Staff at risk of redundancy can be added or join the University wide redeployment email group. Details of vacancies arising at the University are provided each day to staff on the register. Guidance for candidates on redeployment opportunities is available.
