Activities of the Medical Research Unit of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital of Lambaréné, Gabon are focused on the evaluation of new drugs regiments, pathophysiology, immunology and epidemiology of infectious diseases. Although research has traditionally focused on malaria in collaboration with the University of Tübingen; in the past 10 years, and in collaboration with the Leiden University Medical Center, Schistosomiasis, intestinal helminth infections, and allergy have formed considerable put of the research activities a particular attention, and currently the innate and regulatory immune responses of helminth infections are currently being studied.
