Turning the tide of limb loss in diabetes: reducing amputation rates in Yorkshire step by step

Wednesday 18 March 2015, 9.00AM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Various

Recent results in the Diabetes Footcare Activity Profiles (Public Health England, 2014) demonstrate alarming rates of amputation as a result of diabetic foot disease in this region compared to the rest of England. Adjusted rates for hospital episodes of care, nights in hospital, and amputation rates due to diabetic foot disease in the local area are almost all significantly higher than those in the rest of England. Most CCGs performed almost twice the national rate of major amputations, whilst one local CCG had to fund an extra 50 nights in hospital for foot disease per 1,000 people with diabetes, over the year, compared to the national average.

Many foot complications in diabetes can be minimised or are preventable. Local health professionals are invited to a diabetes foot awareness event at the University of York which will cover prevention, screening, early referral and referral pathways with discussion of the reasons for these issues and suggestions for solutions to reduce the risks to your patients.

Organised in conjunction with the University of York and Katharine Speak, Principal Podiatrist, Diabetes and High Risk, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. Attend this event to improve your knowledge of the multidisciplinary team approach to assessment, prevention, treatment and referral pathways, and to join the discussion.
