Manufacturing Robotics Challenge

Posted on 16 July 2019

Ben Eyes, PhD student in the Department of Music, was part of the team that won the RAS Manufacturing Robotics Challenge.

As part of UK Robotics Week 2019, the RAS Manufacturing Robotics Challenge was to create a program to control a Kuka industrial robot.

The program was written in ROS - Robot Operating System, an open source system to control a wide range of robots. Ben's team, which consisted of members from a wide range of backgrounds, was the only team to successfully control the robot with voice recognised commands.

As a result the winning team was invited to receive their award of a Nvidia Jetson Nano at the RAS Robotics symposium.

The winning team members were : Cuebong Wong, Edwin L Anarcaya, Leo Xuanang Liu, Sam Harper and Narcisa C Pinzariu.

Ben's PhD research is based around building computer controlled acoustic instruments. These include drums and string based instruments that explore different possibilities of acoustic instrumentation.
