Things to know this week - 26 September 2022

Posted on 26 September 2022

Welcome - or welcome back - to York! This is your undergraduate student news summary of key things happening across the University this week.

UoY community update

Cost of living support
As we start a new academic year, we know that the cost of living is a major concern at the moment. We've created a cost of living hub to bring together all the support we offer in one place and we’re working hard to be able to offer more. Check that you’re getting the support that’s available.

Get vaccinated
In a large community such as ours, we all need to do what we can to minimise the spread of infectious illnesses. We recommend that you are up to date with vaccinations against Covid-19, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and meningococcal MenACWY vaccines. Register with a local surgery to get these vaccinations if you’re not up to date. See our student healthcare web page for information.

If you feel unwell
A reminder that if you do feel unwell, you should register your illness in e:Vision. See information about self-certification of illness.

1. Get ready to study

Whether you’ve just joined us or whether you’ve been studying with us for a while, the start of a new academic year can be a whirlwind of events and information. Make sure you’ve covered the basics (or see a reminder of things you may have missed) by reading our top tips for getting ready to study.

2. Stay safe on a night out

Our city is known for its quirky venues, traditional pubs, cosy bars and popular clubs and York's nightlife can be part of a great student experience. Make sure your night is memorable for the right reasons: stay together, avoid the rivers, and know who you can call on for help. Please also be considerate of our neighbours and keep noise levels down as you return home. Read our tips to help have a safe night out.

3. Paid student opportunities

We’re currently advertising paid student ambassador roles:

Cost of Living Ambassador
We’re recruiting for a new student role to help students during the cost of living crisis. Our Cost of Living Ambassadors will promote available help to students, signpost information and money-saving tips, contribute feedback on how the University can develop support for students, and identify students who may be struggling. Application deadline: Tuesday 4 October. Apply to be a Cost of Living Ambassador.

Undergraduate Student Ambassador
We’re working hard to expand the recruitment of students who are currently under-represented in higher education. Our paid Undergraduate Student Ambassadors give a fair and accurate representation of the University from a student perspective to prospective students. They assist with a variety of activities, including online events, school visits, open days, campus visits and taster days. Application deadline: Sunday 9 October. Apply to be an Undergraduate Student Ambassador.

4. A chance to develop your language skills

Ever wanted to learn another language or take your language skills to the next level? The Department of Language and Linguistic Science runs year-long or shorter 8-week language courses with options from beginner through to degree level. These range from Languages for Musicians (German/Italian) to Business and Management in Spanish. Application deadline: Friday 30 September. Come to a Languages for All information session this week to find out more.

5. Get involved with our music ensembles

Want to audition for our University choral or instrumental ensembles? We are home to a wide range of ensembles of all shapes and sizes, styles and traditions and any member of the University is welcome to get involved. Auditions start from Wednesday 28 September. Find out more about ensemble auditions.
