1. Kickstart Spring Term

There’s lots going on to help you motivate yourself and develop your academic skills this term. We are running a series of workshops on academic writing - what it is and how to do it, how to formulate arguments and structure essays - as well as general sessions on speaking up and setting yourself goals. Kickstart your term by taking a look at forthcoming Academic Skills Community workshops.

2. Don’t let Blue Monday get you down

This time of year can be difficult at the best of times, not least during a pandemic. The NHS estimates that the winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), affects around two million people in the UK - so you’re not alone if you’re feeling down at the moment. Read our five tips for beating winter depression.

3. What will you do this summer?

Get forward planning for 2022 and register for the online Summer Opportunities Fair on Wednesday 26 January. Find out more about Summer Schools, International Study Centres and travel awards as well as work experience, internship and volunteering opportunities abroad. Where will you go?

4. Develop your career plans

Now is a great time to develop your career plans. Careers and Placements are running lots of schemes this term, no matter what stage you’re at in your degree.

  • First years should look out for their York Strengths Development Day for a great introduction to discovering your strengths and thinking about your career path.
  • Penultimate year students should apply for York Leaders before Thursday 27 January to develop your leadership skills.
  • Finalists should apply for their York Award to help when applying for roles after graduation.

5. Take part in the Campus East Library Project

Do you spend a lot of time on Campus East? The Library is looking for your feedback. Keep a diary of your academic activity for a week and you’ll be rewarded with a £15 Amazon voucher. Interested? Sign up for the Campus East Library Project.
