Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Your questions on industrial action answered
YUSU is hosting a live session on upcoming industrial action with Vice-Chancellor Charlie Jeffery at 6.15pm tonight (Monday 30 January). The discussion will be live streamed from YUSU’s Instagram account. All dates for February and March industrial action have now been confirmed - see industrial action information for students.

Supporting those affected by global crises
We are a University of Sanctuary for asylum seekers and refugees and the University supports those affected by global crises. For our students, this might mean providing support for your wellbeing, financial help and guidance, advice on what to do if you are struggling academically and help connecting with other students. We also have opportunities for our students to help support those whose lives have been disrupted by global events:

• Help refugees and asylum seekers in York improve their English through conversation afternoons. No previous experience is required.
• Support the new UoY Ukrainian Society in organising an event and exhibition to mark one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Friday 24 February.

Correction: Disability drop-ins
Last week, we told you about the weekly Disability drop-in sessions. These take place in the Library on Thursdays and not Tuesdays, as previously stated.

1. Make time to talk

Thursday 2 February is Time to Talk Day, a day when everyone is encouraged to talk about mental health. The more conversations we have, the more barriers we can break down, helping to end the stigma that many people can feel about mental health problems. Download the Time To Talk bingo card to help start conversations.

2. Help to find part-time work

If you want help to find part-time work, the Cost of Living Ambassadors and the Careers and Placements team are holding a drop-in event tomorrow (Tuesday 31 January). Come along to the Piazza building at 4pm for information and resources to help with your job search. Read more about how we can help you find part-time work.

3. A practical guide to maths and statistics

If your programme involves gathering and analysing data then don’t miss our online statistics practical guide. There are resources and practice tests to develop your understanding of statistical concepts and help you use statistics software. Come along to our interactive academic skills workshops on subjects such as Planning for Data Analysis, Choosing a Statistical Test and Getting Started with STATA.

4. What could you do with £1000?

The GSA is offering funding of £1000 for at least four community building projects designed to specifically benefit the postgraduate student community. Applications are welcome from individual students, networks and societies. Find out about the Postgraduate Community Fund.

5. LGBT+ History Month

Every February, LGBT+ History Month aims to increase the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. There are a number of events and activities taking place to mark LGBT+ History Month, including a celebration of Anne Lister this week in Anne Lister College.
