Things to know this week - 3 July 2023: Summer opportunities

Posted on 3 July 2023

Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

1. Handling data or running statistical analyses?

The Maths Skills Centre offers face-to-face or online confidential and personalised one-to-one statistics appointments for all students. Meet with a friendly and experienced tutor who will talk through any statistical software or data analysis queries you may have. You can also find a range of useful online resources. Can’t book or find a suitable time? Email with your available days and times and they will organise it.

2. Are you thinking about your future career?

We want to understand more about the needs of postgraduate students when it comes to career planning and making choices about your future. Share your thoughts in our postgraduate taught student careers survey for the chance of winning a £50 voucher.

3. Recognise your skills and experience

Postgraduates can now apply for the York Award. It’s a formal award of the University that recognises personal and professional development within and outside your programme of study and demonstrates to employers that you have taken a proactive approach to life at university. It is a great addition to your CV, helping you to pull together and reflect on your experiences at York. Apply for the York Award before Thursday 3 August.

4. Free intercultural study workshops

Develop intercultural skills by joining an exchange in York with students from Hong Kong. It’s an opportunity to meet and work with international students and learn about the knowledge, values, attitude, and skills needed to be interculturally competent. Apply for the July intercultural workshops by Monday 12 July.

5. A single students’ union

Following extensive consultation, YUSU and the GSA have announced that they will move towards creating a single students’ union. It is anticipated that an all-student vote on newly elected officer roles and a new set of governing documents will take place in spring 2024. Read the YUSU and GSA joint statement.
