Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Local elections: you will need voter ID to vote in person
Local elections are taking place on Thursday 4 May and, for the first time, you'll need to take photo ID to vote in person. See which forms of voter ID are accepted at polling stations or find out how you can vote by post. Students can vote in local elections with both a ‘home’ and university address - you must register to vote by Monday 17 April.

Coming soon: International Women's Day - Be the Face of Your Story
Join us to celebrate International Women's Day on Wednesday 8 March at our special student curated event Be the Face of Your Story. This exciting event will feature personal stories and inspiring live music from students.

Your first response for security or safety issues on campus
The Security Services team has been renamed the Campus Safety team and are in a new location in Market Square. The new Campus Safety Hub is open 24/7, 365 days a year. The team is your first response for any security or safety issues. They are trained in first aid and mental health first aid. Contact the Campus Safety team via SafeZone, by phone or in person.

1. Got a question about semesters?

The University is moving from terms to semesters in 2023/24. It means the academic year will start and finish earlier and there will be changes to breaks and vacation dates. 2. Win a month's rent: National Student Money Week returns

National Student Money Week returns with the theme ‘Navigating the Numbers: Coping with the Cost of Living’. Explore a variety of activities and resources, including themed daily highlights on our social media channels. Enter Blackbullion’s ‘Spending Snapshot’ competition to get real insight into your financial situation and be in with the chance of winning your rent paid for a month.

3. Finding it hard to focus?

Plagued by distractions? Join The Distractibles Meetup online on Wednesday 1 March for small group chat and to try accessibility ideas. Sign up for The Distractibles Meetup.

4. Become a qualified English language teacher

Would you like to teach English to speakers of other languages? Join our CertTESOL programme, a 5-week course accredited by Trinity College London. The course will run over the summer and you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to begin your English language teaching journey. Applications close on Friday 10 March. Find out more about CertTESOL.

5. Confidence to present in person: academic posters

Your academic poster may be beautifully made, but can you present it effectively? In our interactive workshop on Tuesday 7 March we discuss and practise some of the delivery skills needed to stand by an academic poster and communicate your work to an audience.
