Posted on 23 January 2023

Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Industrial action update
As confirmed in an email to students from Vice-Chancellor Charlie Jeffery last week, the trade union, UCU, has notified universities across the UK that strike action will take place on Wednesday 1 February. In total, there will be 18 strike days across February and March - the dates of other days will be confirmed soon. See our industrial action information for students.

Campus works
Emergency works will continue on University Road this week. You can now check our new campus disruption notices to keep up-to-date with current works so you can better plan your journey to, from and around campus.

1. Change of plan? Know your options

If you are having difficulties with your programme of study, you should talk to your supervisor. A number of options are available to you but it’s important to understand all the implications. See our academic progress information for taught students.

2. SKILLS GUIDE: Academic writing

Academic writing is central to almost all degree programmes. However, it's very different to other types of writing, so it's a skill that has to be learned. Becoming good at academic writing can be a challenge for all! See our academic writing skills guide for resources to help you become a confident and successful academic writer.

3. SUPPORT: Disability Services drop-ins

Disability Services are running drop-in sessions every Thursday afternoon at the Library help desk throughout term. It’s a chance for a quick chat with a practitioner about general disability related queries such as what support is available, medical evidence needed, how to apply for Disabled Students' Allowances or just to drop off paperwork. Find out more about the Disability drop-ins.

4. Do good to feel good

This term, there is a wide variety of exciting community volunteering projects to get involved in, each working with different local organisations on a real-world challenge. Application deadline: Wednesday 1 February.

Or could you make a difference to the lives of young people in York? The York Students in Schools team is currently recruiting volunteers for placements in local schools and nurseries in Summer Term. Application deadline: Monday 6 February

5. Holocaust Memorial Day

For Holocaust Memorial Day, we're inviting students to a special in-person conversation with author Rebecca Clifford on Tuesday 24 January, in which Rebecca will reflect on the creation of the remarkably moving book Survivors: Children’s Lives after the Holocaust. Explore how young survivors of the Holocaust lived after, and with, childhoods marked by rupture and loss. Reserve your free place at our York Holocaust Memorial Day Lecture.
