Things to know this week - 4 October 2021

Posted on 4 October 2021

Welcome to your student news summary of key things happening this week.

Covid update summary: Protect. Respect. Be kind.

Please wear a mask
In consideration of others who may be vulnerable, please wear a face covering when in large gatherings or confined spaces. See the Vice-Chancellor’s latest message on why we are asking you to do this.

Test yourself regularly
Get into a routine of testing yourself twice a week, three days apart. You can collect self-testing kits from college receptions or use the walk-in testing service at Vedge Cafe, Wentworth Graduate College, on Campus West or the Ron Cooke Hub on Campus East.

Get fully vaccinated
There is a walk-in service at the York Vaccination Centre at Askham Bar every day from 8.30am until 7.30pm. Find out about the NHS Vaccination Centre in York. We hope to offer more pop-up vaccine clinics on campus, depending on vaccine availability and demand.

Let us know if you are self-isolating
Remember, should you need to self-isolate, let us know via the self-isolation form to unlock our package of support, including an e-voucher to spend on food.

1. Are you aware of current student scams?

Have you received a text message or email advising you that you are due a tax refund or a phone call from someone offering a discount on paying your fees? Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, students are often targeted by scammers and their methods can be sophisticated and convincing. Find out about current student scams to be aware of and register for a ‘Banking safely and securely’ workshop on Thursday 7 October to find out about how to recognise fraud and protect yourself. You might just be glad you did.

2. How good are you at managing your money?

Now is the time to get a clear idea of your finances. Register for our online ‘Budgeting for university’ session on Tuesday 5 October to understand the world of tuition fees, maintenance loans and how to make your money go further. You can also book a personalised one-to-one budgeting session with a Student Hub adviser. Find out about our student money events and support.

3. Looking after your mental health and wellbeing

Arriving at, or returning to, university is an exciting time, but it can also feel slightly daunting, so it’s good to know what resources are available for you to support your mental health and wellbeing throughout your time at York. Find out about our self-help advice as well as how to find further support should you need it. We’ve recently revised our Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2021-25, where you can find out more about our aims and approach.

4. Funding for personal and professional development

Seen a development opportunity but need funding to realise it? The York Futures Scholarship provides funding for work experience, study abroad, placements, and extracurricular learning opportunities. All students can apply, though preference is given to students from certain backgrounds - check the eligibility criteria. Applications close on Monday 8 November. Find out more about the York Futures Scholarship.

5. Marking Black History Month

The theme to this year’s Black History Month is ‘Proud to be’. Follow our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram this month to hear what Black History Month means to members of our community.
