Things to know this week - 29 November 2021

Posted on 29 November 2021

Welcome to your student news summary of key things happening this week.

Covid update summary:
Protect. Respect. Be kind.

Don’t take covid home
If you’re leaving York for the winter break, make sure you don’t take covid home. Test yourself before you leave and UK students should collect testing kits from college receptions to take a lateral flow test before you return to York

International students travelling home will now have to take a PCR test within two days of arrival back in the UK. Our financial support for international students travelling to York only covers your first trip to York for this academic year - we won’t cover your testing and quarantine costs if you leave York to travel overseas over the winter break.

Check your inbox over the winter break
We follow UK Government guidance, which is reviewed every few weeks, so please check your inbox regularly over the break so we can let you know of any updates for the Spring Term.

For more end-of-term guidance, see the latest email to students from the Vice-Chancellor.

1. What’s on and open on campus during the break

If you’re staying at uni over the break, find out what’s on, what’s open, and who’s available to help if you have a problem. See revised college reception and facilities helpdesk opening, campus catering opening, and Library opening times. Check the MyUoY app or student events page for what’s happening over the break.

2. Academic and wellbeing support over the break

Academic and wellbeing support continues over the break, whether you’re on campus or not. The Academic Skills Community is offering maths, study coaching and writing appointments to provide one-to-one support in honing your skills. Student Minds has some useful wellbeing advice for the Christmas break, including making plans if you’re staying on campus or advice if you’re going home but don’t want to. Plus, the usual sources of help and support are still available.

3. Celebrate Disability History Month

Disability History Month celebrates the lives and achievements of disabled people. There are a range of events across York, including art exhibitions, workshops and forums. Don’t miss tomorrow’s ‘Journey to being active’ talk with Paralympian (and York alumna) Beth Moulam and Frame Runner (and Student Hub Adviser) Mo Onyett.

4. What do you think of your university experience?

What’s working well? What could be better? If you received an invitation to complete the Student Barometer survey, then we need your feedback before the survey closes on Thursday 16 December. Check your inbox for the email from i-graduate and as a thank you for taking part you’ll have the chance to enter a prize draw.

5. Winning UoY Christmas card designs

Huge congratulations to Veniamin Shiron, the winner of our 2021 Christmas card contest! Veniamin’s winning card, featuring a cosy gathering of UoY waterfowl, is now available to purchase, along with three brilliant designs from our runner-ups. All profits from the card sales will be donated to support A Mentally Fit York. Buy your UoY Christmas cards and take advantage of University Mailroom discounts when posting them!
