Biography

I am a PhD researcher in the Department of Sociology at the University of York, working as part of the ERC-funded SYNDATA project on The Ethics of Synthetic Data in the Age of Machine Learning and AI. My broader research interests sit at the intersection of digital sociology, critical data studies, AI ethics and the sociology of algorithms, with a particular interest in how technological systems classify, represent and reshape social difference.

My PhD project, examines how ideas such as diversity, difference and underrepresentation are understood and operationalised within synthetic-data practices. In particular, I am interested in how complex social categories such as race, gender and age are translated into machine-readable attributes, and in the ethical and political implications of using synthetic data to address bias, data scarcity and representational imbalance. More broadly, the project asks how attempts to make AI systems more representative may themselves reshape what diversity and difference come to mean.
