Before taking the plunge into academia, Lloyd spent twelve years working in a range of drug treatment & criminal justice services in Hong Kong, Taiwan & the United Kingdom.

To fund his PhD, Lloyd started his own freelance filming and photography business that resulted in a client base including National Geographic, Sony, Patagonia, Lululemon, The North Face and more. One of the more notable pieces of film work that Lloyd produced was ‘Mira’. This short film documented the journey of Mira Rai, a spirited Nepali village girl on her pursuit to being a world-recognised mountain runner. The film picked up a number of awards at various film festivals including the Grand Prize at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (2017), Prix du Dépassement de Soi at Les Diablerets International Film Festival (2016), Best Film in Mountain Culture at New Zealand Mountain Film Festival (2016) and was the Winner of the Audience Choice Award at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (2016). 

His PhD research blended visual anthropology and criminology where he was able to draw upon his expertise with cameras to produce a documentary film as part of his study into drug use among the Nepalese community in Hong Kong.

Lloyd’s prior academic experience includes holding lecturing positions at The University of York, The University of West London and The University of Hong Kong where he was mainly involved in delivering and leading courses focused on aspects of crime, drug use and research methodology. 

Research

Overview

Lloyd's research draws together approaches from criminology, sociology & visual anthropology that can be summarised in three strands: drugs (using behaviour, markets, harm reduction); visual methods (use of photography and motion film in the research of social issues); and media (representations of crime and deviance).
