I am a Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). My research lies at the intersection of the sociology of culture, media sociology, and the epistemology of sociology.
I work on contemporary cultural and media practices, including music, radio, television series, leisure outings, and the visual arts. I have developed an analytical model of cultural tastes known as the “tablature” model, as well as a model of “cultural differentiation.” These frameworks aim to renew our understanding of contemporary cultural tastes and practices.
The first phase of my research focused on radio studies, resulting in publications such as "Ma radio", Attachement et engagement; France Culture à l’œuvre; Libre Antenne; and La radio et ses publics (with Michel Pinet).
A second strand of research has examined the cultural practices of the French population, leading to works including Les goûts musicaux des Français (with R. Nowak); Sortir. Sociologie des sorties culturelles des Français·es (with P. Cibois, C. Combes, and R. Nowak); Des séries qui comptent (with Clément Combes and Thibaut de Saint Maurice); L'expérience culturelle; Séries (with Clément Combes); La différenciation culturelle; La culture de la chambre; La sériephilie; Le Patrimoine saisi par les associations (with Guy Saez); and Cultural Studies, une anthologie (with Eric Macé and Eric Maigret).
More recently, I have developed a third line of research devoted to the epistemology of sociology, focusing on the sociological discipline itself and on its core concepts.
My work has also featured in journals : Cultural Sociology, Cultural Trends, Réseaux, Media, Culture and Society, Museum and Society, L'Année Sociologique, Revue Française de Sociologie, Revue européenne des sciences sociales, Bulletin of Sociological Methodology, Sociologie et sociétés, Questions de communication.
