Never did I imagine I would be doing a PhD anywhere, but after finishing my Master’s degree in Culture & Difference, I realised I found the theme of otherness in socio-cultural settings very interesting. Once I became aware that I could couple this with my passion for reading and learning about manga, a PhD seemed like the logical next step.
My research is titled: ‘Identity, Otherness and Race in Shonen Manga’. the project aims to uncover if and how shonen manga present and communicate the themes of identity, otherness and race to readers of manga; if and how those themes are interpreted by, or influence the attitudes of readers towards them; and finally, just exactly what impact YouTube has, if any at all, on the consumption and production of manga in the United Kingdom.
