Biography

After BA degree in South Korea, Hyangmi had work experiences in education, film subtitling, and hospitality industry. During the work experience in hospitality industry, she found her academic interests in communication. The interests in communication led her to study MA course. For MA dissertation she analysed political speeches of British and American political leaders. Employing Conversation Analysis, she explored the political speakers’ verbal and nonverbal techniques in their political speeches. The study inspired her to carry out PhD research in cultural and linguistic differences in interaction between a speaker and audiences in political speeches.

She has research interests in verbal and nonverbal interaction in communication, intercultural communication, persuasion, leadership, and charisma in oratory.

Overview

PhD Research

Cultural differences in the relationships between audience responses and the use of verbal and nonverbal devices in political speeches.

Employing Conversation Analysis, the research examines:

  • Cultural and linguistic differences in interaction between a speaker and audiences.
  • Turn yielding cues between a speaker and audiences.
  • Rhetorical devices and nonverbal features in British and Korean political speeches.
  • Cultural differences in effectiveness of verbal and nonverbal cues.
  • Implicit/explicit and invited/uninvited invitations to responses.
