York Sociology - A top ranking research department

Posted on 12 May 2022

The Department of Sociology has maintained its place in the top 5 Sociology units of assessment in the UK.

We’re delighted to announce that the Department of Sociology at the University of York has maintained its place in the top 5 Sociology units of assessment in the UK, coming 4th overall out of 37 submissions in the REF 2021 (Times Higher Education 2021).  Our research has achieved joint 1st place for its real-world impact, with all of our impact case studies rated 4*.  Not only were 80% of our research outputs rated as internationally excellent or world-leading, but our research environment was also ranked within the top 5.  Our congratulations to all Sociology staff and our PGR community at the University of York on this outstanding achievement.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is a process of expert review used in the UK to assess research and its impact in the world.  The first REF was conducted in 2014, replacing the previous Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).  In Sociology at York, we have a sustained history of excellence in research, having now achieved a Top 5 place in three consecutive Assessments.  We’re very proud to have received top ratings (4*) for every impact case study submitted to REF 2014 and REF 2021.  This reflects our deep commitment to being a Sociology department for public good.  Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all our collaborators who have worked so closely with us to ensure our research makes a positive difference to people’s lives.
