A day in the life of a Geophysical Supervisor in the United Kingdom
Need advice or a general chat about archaeology and the sector? I got a job in the commercial sector 2 weeks after graduating.
My career goals when I graduated
To find a stable job in the industry.
My career history
Started off as a site assistant (excavator) for a few months, then moved on to a different company, learnt a hell of a lot very quickly, moved over to geophysics after about a year, got promoted to assistant supervisor, then moved companies where I have been a supervisor since sept 2015.
What has helped my career to progress
Drive and determination to get things done quickly and efficiently.

Health and Safety course.
How my studies have helped my career
You need a degree to even start in this industry, I didn't want to progress with my studies after my BA course and haven't looked back at all, I'm much more of a hands on- get on and do it type of person.
What surprised me about my career so far
The many and varied places across the UK I've visited.

My advice to students considering work
Work hard and put the effort in, if archaeology is the area you want to work in. Its tough, muddy and sometimes stressful, but we do it for the love of antiquity and archaeology and I wouldn't have it any other way. you will get noticed if you work hard enough, and remember to listen and take on board everything your superiors have to teach you, its very valuable information.
My advice about working in my industry
It isn't great money, but the feeling of finding archaeology, whether its a hoard of grey-ware in a roman ditch or an iron age settlement complex, is fantastic and makes this profession one of a kind.

Shallow archaeological prospection using a range of techniques including magnetometry, resistance, GPR.

Strong team-working, tightly knit teams. Use of sometimes foreign equipment/ software.

Finding archaeology!

Being away from my family
What surprised me most
Finding new efficiencies and work practice constantly is great if it allows me to get more out of my day in the field.
