MSc in Psychological Research
Why I continued studying
After gaining some work experience in the sleep lab over the summer between my second and third years I decided I was interested in a career in psychological research. I felt taking this to Masters level was a good way to explore career further before deciding what to do next.
What my course is like
The course involves all aspects of the research process, from initial background research, designing/coding computer experiments, to analysing the data (including the use of more complex analysis techniques). It also involves working as an assistant in a lab at the university, and learning how to use neuroimaging techniques.
How I have funded my studies
I am using the new postgraduate student loan, as well as some of my own savings.
What I like most
I am enjoying working in a lab, and have recently been trained to use eye-tracking equipment.
What surprised me most
That learning to code experiments isn't as horrible as it sounds! and is really an essential skill for anyone wanting to do psychology research
My advice to students considering further study
Remember that a Masters is a lot more work than an undergraduate degree, and some are expensive - so make sure its definitely what you want to do!
If you do decide to do a postgraduate course try and get some relevant work experience whilst at York as this will help with the application process.
