A day in the life of a Civil Service Fast Stream in the United Kingdom

I really like the opportunity to work in a number of Government Departments in a variety of locations, all whilst working on challenging but highly rewarding work.

What I do

I am on the Civil Service Fast Stream, and as part of the programme I rotate through various Government Departments in a number of locations.

I have worked in the Department for Work and Pensions, and I am now working in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

As I am on the Finance Fast Stream, I am also studying to become a Chartered Accountant.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I use a wide range of skills on a daily basis, such as communication skills, leadership skills and teamwork skills.

What I like most

I really like the opportunity to work in a number of Government Departments in a variety of locations, all whilst working on challenging but highly rewarding work.

How I looked for work

I looked at the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers, looked at various organisations websites, and I went to the University of York Careers fair.

How I found out about the job

Recruitment event

The recruitment process

The recruitment process has been streamlined for 2016. To begin with there is a short application form where you enter personal details and add the schemes you wish to apply for, then come the online tests (situational judgement, behavioural and an e-tray) and there is also a online interview. Following this, there is an assessment centre which includes a policy review exercise, a group exercise and a leadership exercise.

My career goals when I graduated

I was looking for a job that I would enjoy and would enable me to make a real difference.

My career history

I worked in a supermarket, I did some voluntary work at a local charity shop and I completed a summer internship. I also got involved with a variety of societies at the University of York.

What has helped my career to progress

The Careers Service was great. Personally, I found that the CV review service they offer was really useful.

Courses taken since graduation

Alongside my work, I am studying to become a Chartered Accountant. The Civil Service gives you paid time off to attend classes and are very supportive of your studies.

My advice to students considering work

Be prepared and do your research into what sectors interest you, what companies work within each sector, and what schemes/jobs are available.

My advice about working in my industry

When applying to any job within the Civil Service, it's really worth looking at the Civil Service Competency Framework as this is what you are assessed on.
