A day in the life of a Internal Communications Intern in the United Kingdom
Getting involved in Careers Service events led directly to this opportunity
My advice to students considering work
My advice to students would be to make the most of the Careers Services at York, particularly the volunteering opportunities. In the months before this summer internship, I took on a voluntary communications and publicity role advertised through the Student Internship Bureau. This provided me with the skills, experience and confidence to apply for the internship with the Wellcome Trust. In my application, it was great to be able to draw on examples and case studies outside of my degree.
I'd recommend attending the careers events, for instance careers fairs or panel events, as these provide a great chance for networking. It was through one of these events that I was able to speak to the Wellcome Trust and find out more about them.
Other advice
In terms of applications for internships, I'd advise applying for a select few. Spend time on each application, do your research and don't just copy and paste information from other jobs you've applied for! Apply for ones you're really passionate about and employers will be able to tell.
What I do
I worked as part of a team responsible for engaging employees with information on what's happening across Wellcome via events, campaigns, projects and publication of need to know news.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Communication skills (verbal and written): A large part of my job consisted of compiling and disseminating promotional material across multiple platforms. This included news articles for the intranet, posters, audio interviews and copy for the staff newsletter. As well as this, I was fortunate to be able to take part in careers workshops including one on presentation skills.
Teamwork: The fast paced nature of internal communications means it’s essential to communicate with team members on a constant basis. I also participated in a group intern project. This involved working as a team to devise duties and allocate work accordingly.
Problem solving: This was particularly useful in event planning and organisation, where I had to determine how different components would come together. The varied nature of events meant I had to use my initiative to resolve unforeseen circumstances.
What I like most
The variety! Working in Internal Comms gives you the opportunity to work with people across the whole organisation. No two days are the same.
What I like least
As I was commuting into London each day, the days could be quite long and tiring.
What surprised me most
I was surprised at how much responsibility I was given. It was great to be given tasks which genuinely mattered and to be trusted to carry these out independently.
