A day in the life of a Marine Wildlife Centre Volunteer in the United Kingdom
What I do
Over the summer I volunteered at Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, The centre focuses on bottlenose dolphin, harbour porpoise and seal research. My role included carrying out land and boat surveys, entering data into a database, helping out in the visitor centre and with education events and other jobs including beach cleans.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I learnt new skills from spotting dolphins, data entry, writing up sightings for the centre's blog and social media and interacting with the public.
What I like most
The rota changed everyday and the jobs were varied which made the role really enjoyable. It was great to work outside and interest with the public. It was also great to go on boat trips to collect data from 2 hour to all day boat surveys.
What I like least
Land surveys have to be carried out throughout the day from 7am to 7pm, even when it's raining which isn't so interesting when there was no sightings.
